Joseph L is correct, it should have been "merkns"--but that can too easily be
confused with "merkins" --the word meaning "pubic wigs"--something I try to
avoid in public discourse.

PS "Their" is not "simply wrong"--we don't have an Academy of Grammatical
Correctness..and even if we did, it wouldn't be the final arbiter: language
is constantly changing through use and that change re-adjusts "standards."
The schoolmarms turned around for one minute and "thee" was gone from the
spoken language and had to be deleted from the primers. I'd be willing to
wager that "their" will be the accepted neutral third person singular
possessive within a generation. Which is fine, it's easy and elegant.
