This may well be true. I have reached the same conclusion. However, for
the moment, every style book of which I am aware still recommends doing it
the old-fashioned way, and scientific writing should reflect
internationally accepted standards rather than colloquial usage in a
single country in which the language is in use.
   I suggest that we now drop the subject.
