Pronunciation of scientific names

The point about learning to read via phonics vs. by memorizing what words
look like is well taken.  I myself learned via the former, and can ALWAYS
figure out a pronunciation of most any English-oid word (not necessarily
the correct one, though!).  Starting in the 1960's, however, many US
schools began to teach reading via the "gestalt" method, with, I think,
unfortunate results.
