Mapping African Mammals

Dear all

As mentioned in my previous communication, as well as a general update on
the progress with this project which aims to map the species-richness and
endemism of Afro-tropical specie, we are also hoping that there will be
people out there who would be able to help us locate distributional
information on some of the more problematic genera and species.  Our aim is
to produce distribution maps for as many of the mammals of Africa as
possible.

At the end of this note is a list of the species and genera that we are
having particular problems with locating distributional data.  This is
because of both taxonomic problems and genuine difficulties ot locating
summarised data on the species distribution.  If data have not been
summarised but exist in uncompiled form, we would be happy to collate the
records ourselves.

If there is anyone who could help with providing either information on
published (papers etc), or unpublished (reports, Museum collection data)
records for the distribution of the species mentioned below, and the
problematic genera of:

Shrews
Smaller bats
Rodents

Then we would be extremely pleased.  However, all comments and observations
on this project are most welcome.  It should be noted that we are following
the taxonomy of Wilson and Reeders (1993) catalogue of species of the world,
and hence data will have to be used within that framework.

Every small piece of information that each person provides will be a
valuable building block in this project, and all contributors will be
acknowledged.  With your help we believe that this work can be completed
within a reasonable timescale, and can provide both useful scientific, but
also some valuable conservation outputs
