Additional comment on my previous remark...
I did not mean to imply that common names are
worthless.  However, they should not be taught
(or referred to at certain times) in isolation of
the scientific name.  Case in point, since legislators
are responsible for crafting endangered species laws,
to have them list, as an example, "bluebells" as endangered
would open the endangered laws to well-deserved lawsuits
(which of many different unrelated genera is the right
bluebells).
