Value of 'naming'

I don't recall the details, but I seem to remember that the AOU had a set
of standardized common names for birds.  I am not proposing that we
attempt to standardize all names, but we do have a system that provides a
level of standardization - Quercus velutina is Quercus velutina no matter
who you are or where you are!
