So there appears to be no reliable definition of what consititutes a "species".

Rejoice and be glad!

The ambiguity and "fuzziness" regarding species boundaries is exactly what
we should expect if evolution is an ongoing, continuous (or at least
reasonably continuous) process. If we actually _could_ classify everything
into nice tidy discrete types, each "reproducing after its kind", then I
reckon we should all take up creationism...
