". . . Taxacom which is a list about biological systematics. Racism, sexism
and the perception thereof are important social issues but not what this list
is about. - Jim Beach"
I agree that affirmative action is a political issue
but I do believe that racism is a subject that belong to a taxonomic
discussion group because race is a taxonomic concept. Every time I read or
hear someone talking about racism, I want to scream, but, don't you know THAT
THERE ARE NO SUCH THING AS RACES IN THE HUMAN SPECIES? Obviously racism has a
huge social/cultural component but if we could at least eliminate the
biological side show, it would certainly clarify the question (besides
eliminating trashy pieces such as The Bell Curve!).
Taxacom is said to have
about 1,000 subscribers, including some of the big names in taxonomy. What
about writing a statement signed by as many of us as possible stating that the
definition of biological races just doesn't apply to Homo sapiens sapiens, so
please everyone, use another word.
