Curtis Clark is right about the problems in Quercus and many other plant
groups where hybridization is common. You might take a look at Bill
Burger's paper , The species concept in Quercus (Taxon, 1975), for some
insights.
It appears that you are dealing with species that fit the classic
morphological or phenetic species concept. If the "populations" retain
their morphological integrity in nature, then they are species; if not,
then start synonymizing.
