I completed my M.S. at St. Louis University in 1968 and my Ph.D. at City
University of New York in 1975. At both institutions at that time, all
material in the Master's thesis and Ph.D. dissertation had to be original
and UNpublished at the time of submission. Also, in both cases the
format required for the institutions was very weird and nothing like a
taxonomic treatment. I had to rewrite my Master's thesis, and my major
professor for my Ph.D., then President of the New York Botanical Garden,
had to personally request from the CUNY President permission for my Ph.D.
dissertation to be in the format of the Memoirs of the New York Botanical
Garden.
At most US universities that I am familiar with, material in
dissertations can not be published prior to submission.
