NEW WORLD WIDE WEB DATEBASE INTERFACE
The Hawaii Biological Survey at the Bishop Museum is pleased to announce a
new user-friendly search form on WWW for our Hawaiian Terrestrial
Arthropod Checklist. It can be accessed directly at:
http://www.bishop.hawaii.org/bishop/HBS/arthrosearch.html
The checklist database contains over 9500 records of terrestrial
arthropods occurring in the Hawaiian Islands. The form allows the user to
fill in specific fields (genus, species, describer, year, etc. as well as
multiple choice fields for mode of origin (i.e., endemic, introduced,
etc.), island distribution, and endangered and threatened status). Uusing
this form for searching the database, the user can make the search
as specific as desired. A short "help" page is available.
The multiple key search permits a variety of queries previously
unavailable through gopher. For example, searches can be made for the
number of species of endemic flies described by Grimshaw from Molokai.
Other Hawaii Biological Survey databases currently on the Bishop Museum's
gopher server will use this WWW search interface in the near future
including checklists and bibliographies for many plant and animal groups
and type specimen holdings.
