I think that you will find that most of use of the abbreviated form, e. g.
HOMO SAPIENS Linnaeus (no parentheses) or HOMO SAPIENS (no author,
no parentheses), or simply MAN (no foreign language) in general discussion,
and then use the full form, HOMO SAPIENS Linnaeus, 1758: 20 (no parentheses)
where it counts. Or transfer it to an another genus (for sake of parentheses).
