what's a race?

I have to write a blurb on races and I need some help (I am in the middle of
nowhere with no easy access to a taxonomy library).

I remember reading a book
by Mayr where he said that a subspecies was just a race with a Latin name
attached to it. Can someone give me the exact quote and the title of the
book?

What's the latest about the concept of race? I believe it has to be as
well defined as a species, except that it can cross breed with other races.
Right? (In fact, this would explain the remark of Mayr: there is no difference
between a race and a subspecies).
