There have been at least two papers written addressing this question:
Dance, S. P., 1960. "Grimwood's Island", its geographical position
and its connection with Hugh Cuming. Journal of Conchology, vol.24
pp.443-445 (including map).
Rehder, H. A., 1959. L'identite de l'Ile Grimwood. Bulletin de
la Societe d'Etudes Oceaniennes, no.127/128 pp.46-48.
The conclusion was that Grimwood's Island is probably the atoll called
Fangatau (a.k.a. Fangataufa or Cockburn Island), southeast of Mururoa, in
the Tuamotu Archipelago.
