The "Necton Microalgae Biotechnology Directory" is a response to the
perceived need of persons working in Applied Algology, for contacts and
information concerning the different players in microalgae biotechnologies.
It was published by the "Escola Superior de Biotecnologia" and Necton,
financed through the European Comission CEDRE- PACTE / PEE program. The
information contained in the Directory is part of the data searches
developed by the Necton company in order to evaluate the business potential
of microalgae biotechnologies. It is believed that nowadays competitiveness
is not gained through secrecy but rather with the diffusion of information.

The Directory aims to improve the growth and development of microalgae
sector providing basic information about:

1- companies involved in the production or transformation of microalgae and
related products (198 complete references)
2- institutions that have specific expertise of interest in Applied
Algology (128 complete references)
3-culture collections (51 complete references)
4-patent information related to microalgae technologies or products (317
references)
5-lists of strains with potential interest for biotechnological use (82
references)

The contents are based in information and data provided, to a large extent
directly by the entities refereed or through related sources, and wherever
possible the information was verified. The contributions came from
companies, research institutions, universities, state laboratories,
database analysis, Internet searches and personal contacts. We believe that
this document is as accurate as possible, and certain parcial information
was included to stimulate future contributions.

The potential users of the Directory are businessman, company managers,
researchers, teachers, students, investors, government officers, policy
makers, suppliers of products and equipments and any others related to
biotechnology. It is the first document of this kind in the field,
providing more than 300 references worldwide. It is our wish that this work
attracts new parties with different backgrounds and expertise that will
help to start new companies, new research projects, develop new
technologies and new concepts. The Directory intends thereafter to be a
working tool for anyone working or interested in microalgae, as well as
consultants and suppliers of products and equipments.
