I don't know about specific facts and figures, but part of the intent
behind the "Botany for the Next Millenium" report recently produced by
the Botanical Society of America was to provide evidence that botany
is a discipline well worth preserving. The integrative approach it
provides is a welcome complement to the process or
levels-of-organization approach used at many other institutions. I
wouldn't suggest that you give the whole thing to your dean to read,
but you may find some useful things in it. (I hope so. I was a member
of the committee that drafted it. ;)
