Software for distribution maps

Many thanks to all who sent information on software for preparation of
distribution maps.  In his message, Ken Hill suggested that a summary of
the information received might be useful to other readers of the list.  In
the list that follows, those listed as "users" generally gave favorable
recomentations for the product they used.  Some also included reservations
concerning price or complexity of the system.  This applied especially to
the GIS systems.

Also, Dieter Walossek (dieter.walossek at biologie.uni-ulm.de) wrote that he
has collected some data on this subject and offered to send it along when
it is ready.

Thanks again to those who replied.  It will be awhile, but I'll try to
let you know how we work out our situation here.
