Since I have received a bit of a negative reaction about my suggestion that
botanists get more grant money than zoologists, I should clarify my
statement. I do not mean to disparage the ability of zoologists to do
research or obtain grants. I am not into stereotyping. However, it is
true here at least that there are more *sources* of grants for botanical
research. First there are the government sources such as ARC and ABRS
(equivalent to NSF), that fund basic research. But there are also industry
and other government sources connected with agriculture, biodiversity
survey, etc. that fund plant research more than animal research. Many
botanists that I know here have large grants from such sources.
