No, simple publication establishes copyright, although explicitly declaring
it is desirable. However, in the United States, unless you've *registered* a
copyright, you can't sue for damages, no matter how many sealed envelopes
you have. (Note: I am not an attorney, even though sometimes I act like one
when the arguments turn to nomenclature.  This information is based on my
readings.)
