I have recently started using Endnote (Niles & Associates Inc.) and it seems
to fit all your requirements. It's available for Mac or Windows. Fields can
be up to 32,000 characters which should be enough for your needs. It has
indexes and a utility called Endlink for importing records downloaded from
databases. There is supposed to be a new version coming which works right
inside Word for Windows. They have a web site at http://www.niles.com.
