For expert assistance with an image processing problem, your friend should
consider signing on to the SciArt-L listserv.  It is sponsored by the Guild
of Natural Science Illustrators and is a forum for professionals in the
field.  Much of the listserve discussion centers on *exactly* the type of
work your friend is doing.
