Source for a quote from Darwin: Help, please

About ten years ago, I published an article in the popular journal
Natural History (AMNH)--hence no references--that included a quotation
from Darwin. Now, a reader of that article (Carol Yoon, who writes for
NYT) wants to know the exact source of the quotation for some piece she
writing (I hope not an expose of poor scholarship in academia...).

Somewhere, Darwin wrote that a good naturalist must learn "...to see
into the life of things."

Does anyone know the source? My notes and memory both fail me.
