Postdoctoral Position in
Molecular Systematics of Braconid Wasps
at
University of Arkansas

A 2-year postdoctoral position is available for the study of molecular
systematics of microgastrine braconid wasps in the Department of
Entomology, University of Arkansas.  The position is funded by a USDA
Competitive Grant,  and has a salary of $28,000 per year.  It may begin as
early as 15 November 1995.

The research project focuses on the use of both morphological  and
molecular data for resolving the relationships among the genera of braconid
wasps of the subfamily Microgastrinae, one of the principal groups of
hymenopteran biological control agents.  The molecular research involves
the extraction, PCR amplification, purification and sequencing of wasp
mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, and subsequent sequence alignment and
phylogenetic analysis.

Qualifications include  a Ph.D in an appropriate field (especially
systematics of insects). We are particularly interested in candidates with
experience in the use of molecular data, especially DNA sequence data, and
who have a strong interest in hymenopteran systematics.   Candidates with
background in morphology-based parasitoid systematics, but with interest
and knowledge in the use of molecular data, will also be considered.

The research will take place in the Insect Molecular Systematics
Laboratory,  and is associated with the University of Arkansas Arthropod
Museum, which is currently being upgraded with the aid of an NSF Research
Collections in Systematics and Ecology Grant.  Other research currently
ongoing in the laboratory focuses on molecular phylogenetics and behavior
of tropical social bees (Dr. Sydney A. Cameron).  Work in the associated
Arthropod Museum is focusing on monographic research on Braconidae, and on
biodiversity assessment techniques.
