many thanks for your help, but there is setting for mail yes/no, but digest (and
index)  has setting only yes... regards Richard

Look:

    SET TAXACOM NOMAIL      [to receive no-mail while out of the
                               office or if bored by current thread]
    SET TAXACOM MAIL        [to receive mail, *DEFAULT SETTING* for
                               new subscribers]
    SET TAXACOM DIGEST      [to receive all messages each day within
                               a single mailing]
    SET TAXACOM INDEX       [to receive a short index each day of that
                             day's mailings (author, subject, date, size)
                             within a single message, individual
                             messages can then be requested via e-mail]
