One postdoctoral position is available for monographic and
database research on tortricine moths. Its location is at
the Essig Museum of Entomology and the Insect Molecular
Systematics Laboratory at the University of California,
Berkeley. The position is funded by NSF-PEET. This program
is designed to enhance expertise in taxonomy at a time when
numbers of taxonomists are declining and yet biodiversity
issues are more important than ever before.

The study organisms are three tribes of Tortricinae that are
most diverse in the New World, particularly the Neotropics.
Tortricids include many pests of worldwide importance in
forestry and agriculture. They also provide a selection of
taxonomic problems that are guaranteed to challenge
phylogeneticists and host-race afficionados alike.

We are looking for committed systematists who will develop
strong skills using morphological characters, molecular
methods and database management simultaneously. Duties
involve production of monographs and phylogenetically-based
classifications, and development and dissemination of electronic
databases, keys and catalogues. Morphological work will range
from dissections and preparation of slide mounts to
morphometric analysis. Molecular work will focus on DNA
extraction, PCR amplification, sequencing and sequence analysis.
Some field collecting may be required. Above all, we hope to
find someone with drive, versatility and an appreciation of
insect biodiversity.

Qualifications are a PhD in an appropriate field, as well as
experience with Lepidoptera biodiversity and insect morphology,
molecular biology or database management.

This postdoctoral position may begin Nov. 15, 1995 or later.
Salary starts at approximately $28,000./year. The appointment
is for one year at a time, with potential for renewal.
