"Just as the US Geological Survey gave us an understanding of America's
geography in 1879, the National Biological Survey will unlock information
about how we protect ecosystems and plan for the future."

With these words, US Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt summed up
the goal of the National Biological Survey: to gather information from many
ongoing government and private efforts and generate new information from
research on the country's biological resources.  Renamed the National
Biological Service in early 1995, the NBS will be a central source of
scientific and technical information for resource managers and planners,
legislators, and regulators.  In an era when the role of government and
the scope of its authority are being reevaluated, the NBS will serve the
nation as it grapples with contentious and challenging issues in managing
its biological resources.

All Symposium participants and speakers are invited to an informal mixer
on the Garden grounds Friday evening, 6 October.  All papers will be
presented on Saturday, 7 October.  Registration must be accompanied by a
$45 registration fee ($35 for students), which includes refreshments at
the Friday mixer, as well as lunch, dinner, and cocktails on Saturday.
Spouses are welcome, and may participate in the social events and meals
for a fee of $45 ($35 for students).  No refunds will be granted after
25 September.

Space limits registration to 400 people.
