INFORMATIONAL ALERT
WISE-USE MOVEMENT UP TO MORE DIRTY TRICKS
The "Wise-Use" movement has created its latest in a series of front groups.
This latest group is called: REPEAL ESA NOW. It is based at a Post Office
box in Coventry, Rhode Island, and is headed by Brian Bishop of the Alliance
for America. This new "group" is part of Chuck Cushman's well funded (by
extractive industry) anti-endangered species efforts.
Alerts from the group are targeting calls and faxes to House Speaker Newt
Gingrich, Majority Leader Dick Armey, and Senators John Chafee and Bob Dole.
The new campaign is a typical wise use "stealth" tactic to "redefine the
radical fringe," wise use observers say. The "Wise-use" crowd will use this
new "group" to make supporters of the Young/Pombo bill appear to be moderate.
We could ignore this group as being on the lunatic fringe if they were not
so effective in using electronic technology to inflate their numbers.
"Don't underestimate the ability of the wise use movement to generate
thousands of faxes and phone calls," said Roger Featherstone of the
Endangered Species Coalition. "We cannot be silent while their fax machines
flood the Capitol."
