It actually started as a pun. "Spam" as internet slang originated from a
Monty Python sketch about lunchmeat. "Spam" means to send a message (often
an advertisement) to dozens of newsgroups and list servers, even though the
subject matter of the message may have nothing to do with the topics those
newsgroups were set up to discuss. "Spamming" is a violation of most
newsgroup charters, and you can complain to "postmaster at name.of.site" when
it occurs.
