Another alternative for small and recent biological collections
restricted to some geographical areas like "provinces or states" in order
to get exact localities is to:

After make an unique and stanadrized list of localities and checcking
field notes "if available" to trace a field trip to reach each locality
and get lat-long by "gps".

this have been done at Universidad Michoacana in Mexico with excellent
results, considering the differences in proportions of number of
specimens, time and geographical coverage.

of course as much exact as better for taxonomic, ecological,
biogeographical and GIS porpuses.
