I believe the book refered to here is: "Plants of the Bible" by Michael
Zohary.  It was printed by Cambridge University Press in 1982. A discussion
of the carob tree can be found on page 63.  As I understand it, the author
did not seem at all very convinced that this was the "locust" eaten by John
the Baptist.
