The following positions are available in the newly established Key Centre
for Biodiversity and Bioresources at Macquarie University, Sydney

Commonwealth Key Centre for Biodiversity and Bioresources

The Key Centre has been established to develop new methods for
the exploration of invertebrate and microbial biodiversity and its
resource potential.  There is a strong emphasis on the concepts and
principles of rapid assessment.  It will carry out basic and applied
research on various aspects of biodiversity, ecology, evolutionary
biology, conservation and biogeography with practical applications
to natural resource management, environmental monitoring and
conservation evaluation.  A broad range of techniques will be
involved both in the field and in the laboratory including recent
statistical and molecular methods and the development of automated
procedures based on laser flow cytometry.

The Centre will develop and offer a variety of educational and
community outreach programs for undergraduates, postgraduate
training, professional and managerial groups and the general public.
These programs will provide for local and long-distance audiences
and will utilise both conventional and electronic modes of delivery.

Lecturers

The appointees will be responsible to the Director, and will be
expected to establish a research program in accord with the research
goals of the Centre, establish and teach a senior undergraduate
course in biodiversity, contribute to the professional development
workshops and courses offered by the Centre, provide leadership in
both research and teaching, supervise postgraduate and honours
students and interact with comparable organisations in Australia and
overseas.

Ref No 17405  Biodiversity

Applicants must have a PhD in an appropriate discipline such as
ecology, biogeography or conservation biology.  Preference will be
given to candidates with  experience in invertebrates and terrestrial
environments.  The third year course to be developed has the title
Biodiversity and Its Measurement.

Ref No 17406 Microbial Biodiversity

Applicants must have a PhD in Microbiology, specialising in
Microbial Ecology, Microbial Taxonomy or Environmental
Microbiology or a related discipline.  Preference will be given to
candidates with training in molecular techniques.  The third year
course to be developed has the title Microbial Biodiversity.



Research Fellows

Applicants must have, or be close to submission of, a PhD in a
relevant area.

Ref No 17407 - Microbial and Molecular Biodiversity

The successful candidate will join a team active in the use of
fluorescent labelled monoclonal antibodies and gene probes for the
identification of microorganisms.  The appointee will be expected to
make a contribution to the teaching programs of the Key  Centre.

Experience in the extraction and purification of DNA from
environmental samples is essential.  Preference will be given to
candidates with experience in PCR and RNA analysis, fluorescent
labelling, fluorescent in situ hybridisation, flow cytometry and
fluorescent activated cell sorting.


Ref No 17408 - Automated Invertebrate Sorting and Identification
                        (Laser Flow Morphometry)

The successful candidate will be associated with both the Key Centre
and the Centre for Lasers and Applications and will join a team
developing instrumentation capable of recognising and sorting
invertebrate specimens at high speed.  The team consists of
physicists engineers and biologists and a workshop staff.  The
appointee will have training in physics, engineering or a related
discipline and practical experience in opto-electronics.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the
application of the disciplines to flow cytometry.


Ref No 17409 - Invertebrate Biodiversity

The successful candidate will join a team active in basic and applied
research in the ecology, conservation biology, assessment and
monitoring of invertebrate biodiversity.  The appointee will also be
expected to apply their experience to the education and training
programs of the Key Centre.

Applicants must have experience in the development of novel
approaches to the assessment of terrestrial invertebrate biodiversity
and their application to natural resource management, developing
and organising major collaborative field research programs,
experience with recent developments in univariate and multivariate
statistical applications, familiarity with invertebrate systematics and
its methods, good working relationships with invertebrate
taxonomists and institutions and experience in conservation
evaluation for invertebrates.



GENERAL

The positions are available for terms of one to three years, with the
possibility of further appointment of up to another three years,
subject to satisfactory performance and the satisfactory progress of
the research project.

Appointment to research positions may be made at either Level A or
Level B.  For appointment to Level B, applicants must demonstrate
extensive research experience and the ability to take a leadership role
in the research project.

Salary ranges:  Lecturer (Level B)      $A42,198 to $50,111 per annum
                Associate Lecturer(Level A)     $A29,539 to $40,087 per annum
