GENERAL INFORMATION
Airlines: Connecting airline service to College Station is available through
either Houston or Dallas, Texas, via Continental (800-525-0280), American
(800-433-7300), and Delta Airlines (800-282-3424). Travellers can book through
to College Station from all major airlines.
Travel by car: There is no direct flight from Austin. For those wanting to
travel via Austin, the trip by car is approximately 90 miles. The trip from
Houston to College Station is approximately 100 miles.
Local transportation: Transportation will be provided for travel to and
from hotels to the conference as well as to and from the airport. Please notify
the local committee as to the time of your arrival and departure.
Texas Sights and Weather: College Station is located in what is known as the
Post Oak Transition Zone of Texas. It is part of the "Golden Triangle", being
90 miles from both Houston and Austin. Both the weather and food are hot, the
pace is slow, the beer is cold, and the horses are fast. Casual dress is
preferred and eating with your fingers or knives is sometimes necessary. Howdy
is a common expression, and boots and hats are for real and not for show. There
are some great sights and restaurants in Houston, Galveston, Austin, and San
Antonio, and the local committee suggests that all travellers, especially those
from abroad, take advantage of these places before leaving our fair state. In
addition, a number of interesting and unique natural areas are within driving
distance. These areas include the Big Thicket to the east, the Edwards Plateau
to the west, and Aransas Wildlife Refuge, Padre Island National Seashore, and
Welder Wildlife Refuge to the south. If you would like specific travel
information, contact members of the local committee.
Collections: Several zoological and botanical collections are located on or near
the College Station campus. The Texas Cooperative Wildlife Collection is
located a few miles east of campus (Dr. Kathryn Vaughan and Dr. George
Baumgartner at 409-845- 5783). The Insect Collection is located in the
Entomology Department on west campus (curators are Dr. Horace Burke,
409-845-9712 and Mr. Ed Riley, 409-845-9711). The Tracey Herbarium is located
on the main campus near the library (curator Dr. Steve Hatch, 409-845-4328).
Participants interested in visiting or utilizing one of these collections should
contact either the respective curator or local committee.
