Gee Meredith, I thought the age of enlightenment was already upon us.
Unfortunately, it is a human failing to look at the world selfishly by
asking of virtually everything, What is it good for?  This attitude is
especially prevalent among those who hold the purse strings - many of our
elected representatives want this test used to decide what monies get
allocated to NEA or NSF.

I agree that we should learn to value our fellow travelers, and the
inanimate, for what they are, not for what use we can make of them.  But
for those whose very existence is dependent on knowing what the palnts
are good for, this is a very logical approach to take.
