You are no doubt aware of the Red Queen Hypothesis in evolutionary theory?
As a great fan of Carroll/Dodgson, I think the appeal is in the "alternate
universes" he proposes in Alice's two journies. Both universes, one a chess
game, the other a card game, obey a set of internal rules just as "our"
universe does. The fun of course is that his universes are illogical to us,
while being internally consistent. Many of the ideas he puts forth have an
application and appeal to biologists or scientists in general, such as the
land where you must run as fast as you can just to stay in the same place.
