Classification and Species

While I appreciate Scott Ranger's contribution of the story about an
"indigenous taxonomist," and know that intelligence springs from genetic
endowment and not formal taxonomic schooling, I am lead to question not
the origins of systematics but the origins of enlightened systematics.
When will humans value plants _for themselves_, rather than "what they
are good for?" What are _we_ "good for?"
