Dear jr19,
        I didn't think a definitive answer to this thread was possible, but
I think your lenghty reply qualifies.  Perhaps you could put together a
more formal version of your historical arguments for journal publication.
Those of us who have not been around so long and who have, perhaps, only a
perepheral interest in nomenclatural alternatives could really do well with
a modern review.
