Perchance, does this reference clarify the problems encountered
when viewing the chess board through rose-colored glasses?

I find that Lewis Carroll captured the spirit of scientific inquiry in
that we do journey into another world to do our work.  And, the world of
our studies is not 'through a glass darkly' but rather 'far from the
maddening crowd!'
