Interactive keys vs. conventional keys

I have been reading the debate on interactive keys with great interest.
I must admit that this relatively recent advancement is outside my
current area of expertise.  Could someone please summarize for me exactly
what an interactive key is, how it is used, and its strengths and
limitations?  I would appreciate the instruction.
