There might be others on TAXACOM unfamiliar with a very useful resource
on the scientific and common names of North American trees:

Little, E. L. Jr.  1979.  Checklist of United States Trees (native and
Naturalized).  Washington.  [Agric. Handb. 541.]

This 375-page book includes for each species an accepted scientific
name and accepted common name followed by scientific and vernacular
synonyms, etymology ("derivation") of the scientific name, geographic
distribution, and sometimes references and additional information.
All scientific names are provided with full citation including the
date and place of original publication.
