Folks,
In addition to the publications mentioned by Karsten, there is an
FDA guide to acceptable market names for food fish, called the THE FISH
LIST, which links scientific nomenclature, regional and "official" common
names and market names. I had not seen any other similar publication that
has the regional names as well. For example: Micropterus dolomieui =
Smallmouth Bass - also known as Black Bass, Bass Hogfish and Black Perch.
As far as I can tell, the names are not inventions of taxonomists, quite the
contrary they seem to have originated within the fishermen culture. The
same principle was used to define the common names for the AFS publications.
Bellow is a quote from the Common and scientific names of fishes:
"The committee aims to develop a body of common names - a single common
name for each species - that reflects broad current usage; to create a
richer, more meaninful, and colorful vernacular nomenclature; and to
promote mechanisms that will add to the stability and universality of
names applied to US and Canadian Fishes."
What's the problem with that ????
