Dear Barry, a Happy New Year to you, too!
I can recommend two programmes one is Buttonware's PC-File where you
could paint whatever type of field you wish and search by alphabetical,
numerical or a global formula search option e.g. palm, Bahamas, red leaves
1994. and get the rest on the screen. I keep 7000 plant records that way and
it is very user friendly and *CHEAP*. The other one is about $100 and is the
bibliographic reference system PAPYRUS which has an open option called OTHER
in the filing menu. Other could be your slides. The added advantage of
PAPYRUS is that you will also have a full bibliographic system at your
disposal with a theoretical infinite number of KEYWORDS such that you
could search your slides by a variety of ideas that you can remember (if
you punch them in as keywords, of course).
