As I understand the CODE, if you cite specimens as DIFFERENT from the
taxon being described, there is no way they could be misconstrued as
paratypes.  I would advise the graduate student to separate the
specimens out which are thought to be of hybrid origin, or somewhat
questionable, and discuss them in a separate portion of the paper.
That way, intent is quite clear, and no self-respecting botanist
would call them paratypes.
