>From a danish newslist, writen by Leif E. Andersen, I received this
information concerning the new phyllum:
NY DYRERAEKKE
dyreraekker man i dag anerkender. Ringbaereren, som dyret kaldt, har nu
faaet sin egen dyreraekke. Der er fundet 5 arter. En af dem baerer sin
larve inden i kroppen, og inden i kroppen findes larvens larve. Den art
kalder man naturlig nok Pandora.
For those of you who don t read or pronounce Danish correctly I provide
this translation:
NEW PHYLLUM:
A Danish scientist, Peter Funch, Zoological Institute [Copenhagen] has
in connection with his thesis on a tiny parasitic worm that lives in the
mouth of lobsters in Kattegat [sea between Denmark and Norway] found it
to be of a such different life-form that it does not fit into any of the
35 phylum s that is recognized today. The ringbaereren [ringcarrier],
as the animal is called, has now gotten its own phyllum. Five species
have been discovered. One of them carries its larvae inside its body,
and inside the larvae its larvae is found. That species is called
Pandora [binomials have not yet reached the news media]. It is only the
third time this century that a new phyllum is being recognized.
[Comments by Leif E. Andersen: The Danish television news group (DR-TVA)
had taken Peter Funch out to a lobster restaurant to take some pictures
of him. The lobsters turned out to be from North America, and Peter
Funch insisted on taking one home alive. According to the DR-TVA this
evening he has also found ringcarrier on that lobster.]
For further information Leif might be of help nyheder at blanet.dk or maybe
better take contact directly with Peter Funch. I am certainly not a
source of information on this topic, chao Peter
