SPECIMEN DATABASES IN RESEARCH AND COLLECTION MANAGEMENT:
A PRACTICAL MANUAL FOR DBASE AND WORDPERFECT USERS

Thanks to all who responded to my survey in October for interest in a
Specimen Databases Manual for dBase users. Sorry I didn't respond
personally, as there were a lot of responses.

The manual, about 40 pp. text, is now available on the Field Museum Gopher, at

fmppr.fmnh.org -> Dept. of Botany Directory
                           "Specimen Management in dBase Manuscript"

The manual was generated for the purpose of a workshop on botanical specimen
databases held in Trujillo, Peru in July 1995. It is a practical manual
outlining how we use dBase (versions IV or V) and WordPerfect (5 or 6) to
manage floristic project collections, including generation of specimen &
annotation labels, determination lists, and floristic checklists. It is not
a "system" designed for general collections computerization. It contains a
lot of information that computer amateurs will find useful, I think,
regarding command language in dBase (which as I am told is similar to that
in other pc database programs), and construction of simple programs, as well
as report generation.

I look forward to receiving your input. We hope to get a hypertext version
up in the next few months.
