I thought PIT stood for Passive Implantable Transponder.  PIT tags
have been used quite extensively in mark-recapture studies and to
identify captive animals.  As far as I know,  they are supplied with
a unique number - I don't know about the feasibility/cost involved in
getting a particular institution's own coding system encoded though.
These tags wouldn't really be suitable for small specimens - they are
cylindrical and about 2.5 cm in length.
