upgrade 1.8a for RESEARCH INTERFACE

        A new version of the RESEARCH INTERFACE program is available at  an
FTP address  at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee FTP server at
ftp.csd.uwm.edu. Log on as
anonymous and change to the directory pub/carabid/GIS/ResInt/program.
(Please note the ftp is part of the FTP address  itself and must be included
for the proper address, ftp.csd.uwm.edu.
         The RESEARCH INTERFACE is a program for speeding the recording and
analysis of specimen data and for constructing databases for use with GIS
software programs. For further information about the program log onto the
above FTP site and directories and retrieve the document called explain.
This ASCII document summarizes major program features.
        For those of you that already have the program log onto the FTP
server and change to the pub/carabid/ResInt/up18a  directory. This directory
contains a single file called up18a.exe. The file is a self extracting one.
To upgrade, backup onto a floppy disk or a different directory the following
RESEARCH INTERFACE files: county.dbf, county.cdx, ri.exe, gismodel.dbf and
spmodel.dbf.  Put into your RESEARCH INTERFACE the up18a.exe  file and type
up18a  and press the enter key. The PKWARE extraction program will ask if
you want to replace the above files. Answer yes for each such question.
After you've used the RESEARCH INTERFACE and are sure that the new files
were not corrupted during FTP, you can delete the backups.
         The new version 1.8a  makes databases that have 19 digits for the
whole number portion of latitude and longitude. These extra decimal places
are now required by some GIS programs, such as Atlas GIS for Windows. These
GIS programs convert latitude and longitude into projection units based on
whatever map projection you are using. Many of the projection units require
19 decimal spaces. When you tell the new version of the RESEARCH INTERFACE
to make GIS files, it will include in each such file additional fields
called olat  and olong. These additional fields contain the original
latitude and longitude values for reference and aren't changed by GIS programs.
