Large (50ha) forest dynamic plots

Recently many 50ha forest plots have been/are being established to gather
information on forest dynamics [long/short term]. I am curious to know
the view of TAXACOM community on pros and cons of having such large plots
versus small many plots to study forest dynamics. [Condit, Hubbel and
Foster,1992 in  BioScience 42(11):822 gives some info about BCI/Panama plot].
