Numeric taxonomic code of NODC

Thanks to those who replied on and off list to my question. To quote one
off-lister:- "The binomial system has won out over another so-called
advance."  If there is still a place for NODC-like structured codes in
databases that place probably isn't at the user interface. Hidden (or
visible) arbitrary code numbers are another story it seems.

Stan Blum mentioned the Association of Systematics Collections data model.
It's been out for a while -- over a year. Does it work? Are there yet
faithful (or modified) implementations that anyone would like to mention?
