who is USNM?

Which institution uses or used the institution code 'USNM'?
G.H.H. Tate of Harvard used specimens from USNM in 1952 when describing
Queensland mammals, but did not identify the institution further. It is/was
 probably in the USA but not necessarily. If any one has a clue please let me
 know.
