FACULTY POSITION IN BIODIVERSITY*
DATE OF APPOINTMENT: 15 August 1994
RANK: Assistant Professor
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Tenure-track position for biologist with a background in
biodiversity and interest or experience in geographic information systems.
Ecologic or taxonomic area of specialty is open.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach introductory biology and one or more courses related
to biodiversity, a methods course or seminar in GIS, and course in area of
research specialty. Serve as an academic advisor and contribute service to
the University. Supervise M.S. students in departmental graduate program.
QUALIFICATIONS: Earned Ph.D. in a field specialty in the biological sciences,
emphasizing biogeography, systematics, and/or ecology. Teaching and/or post-
doctoral research experience preferred. Applicants must have strong
communicative skills and commitment to excellence in teaching. Ability to
interact professionally with a diversity of other biologists, to acquire
extramural research funding, and to report research in the open literature.
SALARY: competitive *(Funding of position is subject to final administrative
approval.)
DEPARTMENT: The Department of Biological Sciences and Allied Health has 19
full-time and 3 part-time faculty members representing the disciplines of
biology, botany, zoology, natural resource management, and several allied
health curricula. The Department offers B.S. and M.S. degrees in biology.
Research resources available include a scanning electron microscope,
excellent computing facilities, extensive museum collections (representing
the disciplines of botany, entomology, ichthyology, herpetology,
ornithology, mammalogy, paleobotany, and paleontology), a 1,000-acre tract
of native prairie and other research areas, a greenhouse, and a live-animal
housing facility.
UNIVERSITY: Fort Hays State University is a state-supported, liberal and
applied arts institution governed by the Kansas Board of Regents. It serves
primarily the western one-half of Kansas. Nearly 6,000 students are
enrolled in four colleges (Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, and
Health and Life Sciences) and a Graduate School, which have a combined
total of 338 full-time faculty members. The campus is modern, spacious
(4,160 acres), and attractive, and has outstanding museums, galleries, and
cultural and recreational facilities. The Fort Hays Branch Experiment
Station of Kansas State University is adjacent to the campus.
COMMUNITY: Hays is a city of about 17,000, located about midway between Kansas
City and Denver on I-70. It is a regional center serving the cultural,
health, educational, business, service, and transportation needs of much of
western Kansas.
